Cuttack: Even though three months have passed since Cyclone Fani pummelled Cuttack, the lone LPG crematorium in Khannagar is yet to be made functional. The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has not carried out repair of the crematorium which suffered severe damages during the Cyclone.

Denizens of the Millennium City especially poor have been facing difficulties to cremate the dead after the crematorium’s chimney was broken in the cyclone.

“The repair work of crematorium is yet to be done. Those who do not have money to purchase timber for cremation are facing a lot of difficulties,” said Amarendra Mohapatra, a resident of Cuttack.

Echoing similar views another resident Dhruba Chandra Mohapatra stated that homeless people have been suffering the most due to the delay in repair work.

After the city’s first electric crematorium set up in 1984 went kaput, the CMC had converted the electric furnace into a LPG furnace two years back.

Meanwhile, CMC Commissioner Ananya Das said tender has been invited and the repair work of the crematorium will be completed by the end of this month.
