Low pressure area over Southwest Bay of Bengal intensifies; IMD issues yellow warning across Odisha

The low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area as of 0830 hrs IST on Tuesday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, off the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, by the afternoon of Wednesday.

Following its intensification, the system is likely to continue moving west-northwestwards towards the north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts, with further intensification expected during the subsequent 24 hours.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall has been recorded at a few places over southern Odisha districts, and at one or two places in northern Odisha, under the influence of the system.

Day-3: Valid from 0830 hrs Ist of 23.10.2025 to 0830 hrs Ist of 24.10.2025: 

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Nabarangpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.

Day-4: Valid from 0830 hrs Ist of 24.10.2025 to 0830 hrs Ist of 25.10.2025: 

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

Yellow Warning: Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Cuttack. IMD has issued yellow warning in respect of the above districts.
