Bhawanipatna: People whose livelihood has allegedly been hit by the shutdown of Vedanta's alumina refinery at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi district on Wednesday demandeed reopening of the plant.
A large number of affected people gathered at main gate of the plant to highlight their plight after the refinery was closed in December last year due to shortage of bauxite.
The demonstrators also met President & COO of Vedanta Aluminium Ltd (VAL), Mukesh Kumar and requested him through a memorandum to restart the refinery which provides livelihood to more than 10,000 people in Kalahandi and Rayagada districts.
"We have been trying to procure bauxite to run the plant but our attempts have gone in vain," Kumar said.
More than one thousand locals people from Lanjigarh, Muniguda, Dahikhal, Ambodala, Biswanathpur area gathered at the plant main gate demanding re-start of the refinery, sources said.
"The local young entrepreneurs who invested on their business considering the plant operations are now in very serious financial crisis as they could not service the loans repayments advanced by the banks and financers," locals said in a memorandum.
