Locals halt road work over substandard construction in Cuttack

Cuttack: Agitated over substandard quality of roads, some local residents halted construction work in Bhimdaspur area of Salepur block in Cuttack today. Villagers alleged that patches of the newly constructed 14-kilometre long road from Bhimdaspur to Kharakhiya have started to come out.

“The road construction is of poor quality. The contractor is not willing to listen to us. We even stopped the vehicles passing-by to protest against such road construction,” a local resident Bimbadhar Mohanty said.

According to sources, the road is being constructed at the cost of Rs 7 crore.

During the protest, the farmers halted the road construction work and also threatened to intensify protest if the road is not constructed properly.

Another local resident Phabhat Kumar Nayak said, “They came to work at night, however the quality of road construction was very poor. The villagers even protested against it while the contractor ignored our demand. The road has developed potholes overnight.”

On the other hand, the sub-divisional officer of Rural Development Department has refuted allegations of poor quality road construction and said that the villagers are obstructing the construction work.

“Some unsocial people have damaged the road. There has been no instance of low quality construction on that road. The quality of work is being checked by the Junior Engineer (JE) at regular intervals. All the allegations of poor quality construction are baseless,” said Sarbendu Sutar, SDO, Rural Development Department, Salepur.
