Bhubaneswar: Odisha government has decided to set up the state's first liver transplantation unit at the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.
 
The proposed unit is scheduled to be functional in January 2014, said Health and Family Welfare minister Damodar Rout.
 
The facility would be a boon for patients of liver diseases as it would provide treatment inside the state therefore cutting down the cost of treatment.
 
The groundwork for establishment of the highly specialised facility was underway, Rout said adding that the facility would be built in phases that include setting up of infrastructure, procurement of equipments and infusion of trained doctors, paramedics, transplant coordinators and counsellors.
 
The authorities of the medical college and hospital has already earmarked space for the centre which would have advanced OTs, ICUs, pre-operation and post-operation wards and counselling centres.
 
Approximate cost of establishing the unit will be about Rs four crore, for which the Health and FW department will make necessary budgetary provision.
