The Odisha government has announced a shift towards Tetra Pak packaging for liquor, replacing traditional glass bottles in the state. The move was revealed by Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, who hailed it as a step toward promoting environmentally sustainable practices.
According to Minister Harichandan, liquor in Odisha will soon be sold in tetra packs, a packaging format similar to those used for soft drinks and fruit beverages. The new format is expected to gradually replace glass bottles in retail outlets across the state.
Harichandan emphasized that this transition aims to promote environmental protection by reducing the hazards associated with glass waste. Tetra packs are considered lighter, less prone to breakage, and easier to handle during transportation and storage, making them a safer and more efficient alternative to glass.
Broader Modernization Efforts
The decision is part of a broader effort to modernize the state’s excise system and adopt safer, more sustainable packaging alternatives. The government believes that replacing glass bottles with tetra packs will significantly reduce the environmental impact of liquor packaging and improve waste management in the state.
