Bhubaneswar: Frenzied mob on Thursday beat a leopard to death near Gandarpur in the outskirts of the state capital as two persons were injured in leopard attack after it strayed into the human habitat.

As per reports, the leopard aged around 11 years was spotted in the wee hours today by children and people who were out for a morning walk. The leopard was hiding in bushes near a cricket field and attacked two people.

As the news spread, the panic-stricken villagers armed with sticks and cricket bats chased the leopard and beat it to death before the forest officials and the tranquilizing team could reach the spot to trap the animal.

Though the officials were informed about the incident, the leopard was beaten to death before their arrival.

After executing the animal, the villagers took the carcass to the middle of the village and displayed as a sign of victory.

Meanwhile, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) has said action would be taken against those involved in the incident under Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972. Besides, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has informed that the matter will be looked into.

The forest officials suspect that the leopard might have sneaked into the village from nearby Chudand forest.
