Lease holder BK Mohanty arrested in Uliburu mining scam

Bhubaneswar: Lease holder BK Mohanty, who was detained by the vigilance sleuths on Monday during raid on his residence, has been arrested today from Cuttack in Uliburu mining scam. He has been brought to Keonjhar and is likely to be produced before the local court, vigilance SP SB Mishra said.

The investigating team on Monday raided at 10 different places in Bhubaneswar, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj in connection with the mega scam and detained lease holder, B K Mohanty for further investigation. The sleuths also seized some important documents related to mines from him.

The team launched search operations at the residences of some government officials and others involved in the scam in different places in Bhubaneswar, Keonjhar district, Mayurbhanj and Rourkela.

Though the team conducted raid on the residence of Dipak Gupta, who allegedly raised iron ore under the authority of a power of attorney obtained from B K Mohanty, at Barbil, the house was locked. Vigilance department filed cases against him and his family members including wife Nitu Gupta, father Haricharan Gupta, mother Santa Devi and brother Champak Gupta. Besides, cases have also been registered against 18 officials of the forest and mines department, sources added.

Mohanty, who has 35 hectare iron ore lease at Uliburu in Joda mineral circle, is accused of illegally raising and exporting iron ore worth Rs 1,800 crore up to 2009, before the irregularities came to fore. The miner is said to have excavated huge amount of iron ore beyond his approved lease area.

The enforcement squad of the State steel and mines department had submitted a report in March showing violation of rules in B K Mohanty mines, based on earlier investigations of Joda DDM. Following revelations of the scam, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in July had ordered a vigilance probe.
