Lawyers demand arrest of all 4 accused; protests to continue
Cuttack: The Orissa High Court Bar Association has decided to continue its protest till all the four accused who allegedly assaulted a lawyer in Cuttack are arrested by the police.
Speaking to media persons, President of the High Court Bar Association, Srikant Nayak said “Decision has been taken to continue the strike and picketing before government offices. However, banks and the treasury will be allowed to function as it is affecting the people in general.”
“As the Chief Minister is out of state, the decision to gherao his residence has been kept on hold. A decision in this regard will be taken on Friday.”
Earlier yesterday, the Crime Branch of Odisha Police arrested two officials in connection with the assault of the lawyer.
Notably, on August 28, lawyer Debi Prasanna Pattnaik was allegedly beaten up by police personnel in public view at Shastri Nagar in Nuabazar area of Cuttack. Next day, a police vehicle parked near Revenue Divisional Commissioner’s (RDC) office was torched during a protest by lawyers.
Protesting ‘police excess’, the High Court Bar Association had called for a cease-work stir on August 30. Cuttack DCP Akhileswar Singh had suspended two Constables—BK Samal and UK Bhuyan and a Havildar PK Behera in connection with the incident.
Meanwhile, two PILs have been filed in the Orissa High Court seeking judicial enquiry into the whole incident.
