Lawyers call for bandh in 4 districts on Dec 18

Koraput: The Joint Action Committee of the lawyers has called for a bandh in four districts – Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri – on December 18, over non-fulfilment of their long-standing demands of establishment of a permanent High Court bench in undivided Koraput.

The decision was taken during a meeting of various lawyers’ associations in Rayagada on Saturday.

Following the meeting, the lawyers said they had to call for the bandh as the government was not taking their genuine pro-people demands seriously.

As a mark of protest, the ongoing cease-work agitation will continue till December 17 and if the demand is not fulfilled, protests will intensify on December 18, threatened a lawyer.

Business establishments, markets, shops, schools and colleges will remain closed during the bandh. This apart, the vehicular movement as well as rail traffic are likely to be affected, sources added.

Joint Action Committee member, Sasananda Mishra said “We are organising economic blockade on December 18 to draw the attention of the government towards the issue. The whole of undivided Koraput will be shut down on that day.”

“All shops, markets, schools and colleges will remain shut in undivided Koraput. Only the emergency services will be allowed to function,” said Bishnu Prasad Panda, president, Rayagada Bar Association.
