Mayurbhanj: In a glaring example how the ongoing cease-work agitation of lawyers is adversely affecting the lives of common man across the State, the last rites of a woman was delayed for almost two days in Mayurbhanj district.

The shocking incident was reported from Sikarghati village under Baripada Sadar police limits.

According to reports, the last rites of one Sombari Soren (60) was held up as the family could not seek necessary help to bring the elder son of the deceased Sanjay Soren on bail.

Sanjay was arrested for his alleged involvement in illegal liquor trade in the village on October 9. Though the family had tried to bring him out on bail, due to lawyers’ agitation, they failed in their attempts.

The family further claimed that they also approached the jail authorities, who too turned down their requests.

With no other option, Sombari’s younger son lit her pyre, the ritual which is mostly conducted by the elder son.

“We had tried all possible measures, but due to the ongoing lawyers’ strike, the son of the deceased was deprived of performing his duties and getting a glimpse of his mother for the last time. We urge that the government should consider such cases so that people do not suffer,” said grandson of the deceased, Sanatan Kisu.
