Bhubaneswar: The ashes of former Prime Minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be immersed in the Bay of Bengal near Puri today as part of the BJP’s ‘Asthi Kalash Yatra’ across the country in commemoration of the iconic leader.

As per reports Asthi Kalash- the urn containing the ashes of the late PM will be taken on a grand procession to the sea beach in pilgrim town where it will be immersed.

Leaders of Odisha unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) including Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, state unit chief Basant Panda, Union Minister Jual Oram, senior leaders, party workers and general public will accompany during the procession ceremony from the party’s state headquarters in Bhubaneswar, sources said.

After Puri, the ashes will also be immersed in ghats of Mahanadi, Brahmani, Baitarani and Rushikulya rivers.

Informing about the Kalash Yatra, party leader Sudipta Ray said the procession will begin at around 9.30 am from party headquarters and go through Bhubaneswar-Puri main highway. Special functions have been organised at Pipili, Dandamukundapur where the urn will be paid tributes. Commemorative ceremonies will also be held in Kadua and Chandanpur. After entering Puri town, the urn will be taken on a grand procession to the sea beach through the Badadanda where the Vedic rites will be performed.

BJP state president Basant Panda on Wednesday received the urn from External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj at a special function in New Delhi during which the party’s top leadership handed over the ashes of the late PM to party presidents across the country. After reaching Bhubaneswar, the urn was taken to BJP headquarters where a special prayer meeting was organised in memory of the departed soul.

The revered leader died at 93 on August 16.
