In a significant political development ahead of the Nuapada by-election, former BJD leader Lambodar Nial has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Nial has also resigned from BJD, formally notifying the party president of his decision through a letter.
Lambodar Nial had earlier contested from the Kalahandi Lok Sabha constituency as a BJD candidate. His switch to the BJP comes amid increased political activity in the region ahead of the by-poll. On Thursday, Nial visited BJP candidate Jay Dholakia’s residence, where the two leaders held a closed-door meeting.

With Nial’s induction, the Odisha BJP is likely to strengthen its organisational base in Nuapada and adjoining regions. The move is seen as another setback for the BJD, which has already faced a series of defections in recent weeks as campaigning for the by-election gains momentum.
