Keonjhar: A labourer was killed and eight others seriously injured on Wednesday when a portion of an under-construction building of an educational institution collapsed in Orissa`s Keonjhar district, police said.

The front portion of the private institution along the national highway near here collapsed when several workers, including women, were working under the structure, they said.

Fire brigade personnel equipped with machines and local volunteers carried out rescue operation and pulled out the injured from the collapsed structure, police said adding work was being undertaken on a war-footing to clear the debris.

The body of a labourer was recovered and the injured were admitted to hospital.

While the identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained, the injured were identified as Abul Rok, Sheragul Sheikh, Srikant Poda, Baxi Sheikh, Zaliur Sheikh, Gora Dalei, Jyotsna Nayak and Shanti Nayak, police said.

While Jyotsna and Shanti hailed from Pandapada area near here, the rest belonged to West Bengal.
