Kujang cracker victims still critical

Cuttack: The death toll in the Kujang cracker explosion incident that took place on November 16 has reached four with the death of one more person on Monday at the SCB medical college and hospital in Cuttack. Four other seriously wounded victims of the explosion are still struggling for survival in the same hospital and doctors are in no position to rule out further casualties.

Doctors at the SCB medical college said that the condition of at least persons who received grave injuries in the incident was critical. While the family members of the deceased persons have been shocked due to the incident, the attendants of the four persons have been spending sleepless nights in the hospital and desperately praying God to save their near and dear ones. Said Khira Patra, father of an injured man,"We have none other the God to fall upon at this moment."

While a ten-year-old boy died on the next day of the tragic incident, one fakir Patra succumbed to his burn injuries three days after the incident. Only last week Bijan Jena became the third victim while Rahas Jena was the fourt one to die on Monday. All the victims have been admited to the plastic surgery department of the SCB medical. All the eight injured persons peaked out their living from making and bursting crackers during festival and marriage ceremonies. The tragic incident had created a flutter in the political circle especially in the ruling BJD as three of its MLAs started slanging match over the incident. Te incident had taken place while bursting crackers during the welcome procession of Barabati-Cuttack MLA Devashish Samantray who hails from Tirtol. Devashis heads the labour union which was celebrating a function. His political bete noire and former minister Damodar Rout immediately sparked off a verbal duel holding Devashish responsible for the deaths.
