Bhubaneswar: The Bar Associations of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nawarangpur and Rayagada districts under aegis of Koraput Scheduled District Central Coordination and Action Committee have resorted to economic blockade today demanding a permanent bench of High Court in Jeypore.

In Koraput, the district bar association has also called for a 12-hour bandh in support of the demand. Members of the bar association picketed at several places and paralysed movement of vehicles on NH-26.

Sources said train services in the district have also been affected in a big way. Samaleswari Express which was scheduled to leave the Korpaut town in early morning has been delayed as agitating advocates are protesting on rail tracks.

"There should be a permanent HC bench in Koraput district for the benefit of the poor litigants and common men of the scheduled area which has been neglected in several ways," said Nihar Patnaik, President, Koraput Bar Association.

Besides, traders across the district have downed shutters and joined the agitation. Educational institutions, banks, business establishments and government offices remained closed.

Court proceedings were hit in the four districts due to the cease work by members of bar associations. In Jeypore, advocates have been striking for the past 13 days.

“Our demand is genuine and the government should act on it soon,” said an agitating lawyer.
