Konark Dance Festival opens with classical splendour; 140 artists join sand art showcase

The 36th Konark Dance Festival opened on Monday with CM Mohan Majhi inaugurating the five-day cultural celebration at the open-air auditorium near the iconic Konark Sun Temple in Puri. Being held under the supervision of the State Tourism Department, the festival commenced alongside the Subhadra Shakti Mela at Chandrabhaga, setting the stage for a vibrant week of cultural and artistic festivities.

The inaugural evening featured mesmerising Odissi performances inspired by the Hanuman Chalisa, offering a tribute to Pavan Suta Hanuman, followed by a Bharatanatyam recital. The presentations drew acclaim from audiences, including visitors from India and abroad, reinforcing the festival’s reputation as a premier platform for Indian classical dance traditions.

State Support and Distinguished Attendance

According to reports, the festival is being organised by the State Tourism Department in collaboration with the Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC). Tourism Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida graced the ceremony as the chief guest, accompanied by all MLAs from Puri district.

Chief Minister Majhi, in his address, said, “The Konark Dance Festival plays a vital role in preserving the rich cultural heritage of our country. It is not merely a stage for performances; it is a platform where artistes and enthusiasts from India and abroad can experience and celebrate our traditional art forms.”

International Sand Art Festival Draws 140 Artists

The International Sand Art Festival, held annually alongside the Konark Festival, also began on Monday at Chandrabhaga beach. This year’s edition features around 140 sand artists, including participants from Spain, Russia, Japan, Portugal, and Sri Lanka. The global showcase brings together unique creations from across the world, adding international depth to the cultural celebrations in Konark.

The simultaneous hosting of both festivals continues to highlight Odisha’s artistic legacy while attracting visitors, performers, and cultural ambassadors from India and abroad.
