The investigation into the murder of a tribal student at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Bhubaneswar is set to take a crucial turn, with police reportedly preparing to question doctors from Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) amid serious allegations of a cover-up and procedural lapses.
According to sources familiar with the probe, the student was allegedly strangled to death, but the cause of death was reportedly declared as cardiac arrest following diarrhoea. The claim has sparked widespread outrage, particularly over the fact that no post-mortem examination was conducted, a lapse that investigators are now closely examining.
Sources said the doctor concerned had allegedly attributed the death to natural causes, raising questions over whether the assessment was made independently or under external influence and pressure.
Investigators are reportedly probing whether any instructions were issued to avoid a post-mortem and whether there was pressure to portray the death as non-suspicious.
Officials indicated that the doctor could be questioned soon, as investigators believe his statement may be the key to uncovering the mastermind behind the incident and identifying any possible attempt to suppress facts. Earlier, both the Police Commissioner and the Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights had publicly stated that medical officials involved in the case would fall within the scope of the investigation.
The role of the KISS and KIIT management is also reportedly under scrutiny, with investigators examining whether any senior functionaries had prior knowledge of, or influence over, the handling of the case.
Meanwhile, tension prevailed at the KISS campus on Saturday after a women’s organisation allegedly faced obstruction while attempting to enter the premises to protest the student’s death. Sources said security personnel denied them entry, leading to a confrontation at the main gate.
Members of the organisation alleged that security guards manhandled some of them, following which the group staged a sit-in demonstration outside the campus. The incident has further fuelled allegations of institutional high-handedness and lack of transparency.
However, no official response has been issued so far by the authorities of KIIT University, KISS or KIMS, despite repeated attempts to seek their version.
