KISS student murder case: Police team arrives at KIMS Medical College, family’s allegations of foul play prove true Photograph: (OTV)
A team of the Twin City Commissionerate Police led by the Infocity Police Station inspector-in-charge, visited KIMS Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday as part of the investigation into the murder of a Class IX tribal student of the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Bhubaneswar.
Sources reported that the team is currently probing and ascertaining the circumstances under which the student was brought to the medical facility and the sequence of events that followed.
The visit assumes significance amid allegations by the victim’s family that the hospital handed over the body without conducting a post-mortem examination and without providing any medical documentation explaining the exact cause of death.
Why Police Team Is At KIMS?
According to sources, police are at KIMS to examine why the student’s body was sent to Keonjhar without a post-mortem being conducted in Bhubaneswar, despite the death being reported from a residential educational institution.
The above allegations were made by the deceased boy’s father earlier on Monday. Investigators are also expected to probe why the death was allegedly described as unnatural or accidental when preliminary police findings later indicated homicidal violence.
Family Had Alleged Murder
The deceased student, a resident of Tikargumura village in Keonjhar district, was enrolled at KISS. Earlier, KISS authorities informed the father, Raghunath Munda, that the boy had slipped in a hostel bathroom fractured his leg, and was admitted to hospital for treatment.
However, the family claimed that by the time the father reached KIMS Medical College and Hospital, the student had already died. They alleged that the body was handed over without any explanation regarding the cause of death and without medical records, discharge summaries, or treatment papers.
They had also claimed that the boy’s body had visible injury marks, including ones near the neck, suggesting that the incident was a murder.
Police Confirm Murder, Two Officials Detained
The police visit to KIMS comes hours after the Twin City Commissionerate Police confirmed that the student was murdered by his classmates, contradicting the institute’s earlier claim of an accidental fall. According to police, the student was assaulted and strangulated inside a hostel washroom following a dispute.
Three students have been detained in connection with the murder. In a related development, police have also detained two officials for questioning as part of the widening probe, though their identities have not yet been disclosed.
As of the filing of this report, neither KISS authorities nor KIMS Medical College and Hospital have issued a public statement addressing the police visit, the allegations of procedural lapses, or the claims regarding the absence of medical documentation.
