KISS student murder case: Police flag discrepancies in KIMS hospital reports, action against doctors likely

The investigation into the reported murder of a Class IX student at the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) has entered a critical phase on Monday, with police formally seeking a technical opinion from a medical board regarding the conduct and assessment of doctors who treated the deceased at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).

Sources reported that a detailed report concerning the medical treatment provided to the student, along with the post-mortem findings, has been forwarded to the medical board for expert evaluation.

The board has been asked to examine whether the clinical records submitted by the treating doctors align with the post-mortem report and accepted medical protocols.

Discrepancy Between Medical Records and Post-Mortem

Police have flagged an apparent mismatch between the treatment documents prepared by the doctors at KIMS, Bhubaneswar and the post-mortem findings. According to sources, the student was allegedly killed by strangulation, while the initial medical assessment reportedly cited death due to cardiac arrest following diarrhoea and vomiting.

Police have sought a technical report from the medical board to determine whether the diagnosis recorded by the doctors was medically justified.

Officials indicated that action against the doctors may follow, depending on the conclusions reached by the board.

Focus on Cause of Death Declaration

The investigation is also examining the circumstances under which the cause of death was described as natural. Sources said police are probing whether the doctors acted independently or under external influence while recording the cause of death.

Authorities are attempting to ascertain whether any instructions were issued to portray the death as non-suspicious and whether there was pressure to prevent the case from being treated as a homicide at the initial stage.

Role of Institutions Under Scanner

The roles of KISS, KIIT, and KIMS authorities are also being examined as part of the wider probe. Police are looking into whether any senior functionaries of the institutions had prior knowledge of the incident or influenced the handling of the medical and administrative response.

Earlier, senior police officials and the Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights had stated that medical officials connected with the case would fall within the scope of the investigation.

Campus Tension and Protests

Meanwhile, tension was reported at the KISS campus after a women’s organisation was allegedly stopped from entering the premises to protest the student’s death. Sources said security personnel denied entry, leading to a confrontation at the main gate, following which the group staged a sit-in outside the campus.

The organisation alleged manhandling by security staff, further intensifying allegations of institutional high-handedness. No formal complaint details have been made public so far.

As of now, no official response has been issued by the authorities of KIIT, KISS, or KIMS regarding the allegations, the medical discrepancies, or the police action.
