A new controversy has surfaced against the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) from Kandhamal district, raising serious questions about the institute’s handling of student deaths. The family of a deceased tribal student has alleged that KISS attempted to cover up the incident by claiming the boy died after accidentally slipping and falling.

The Class III student from Kandhamal died on January 26 last year under suspicious circumstances. According to the family, the child was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died in the ICU. They claim the body showed stitches on the neck, head, and eyes, casting doubt on the official explanation of a minor fall. The family also alleged that no post-mortem examination was conducted, fuelling suspicions of a deliberate cover-up.

"We were first told that our son slipped and fell down. Later, we were told that he died. When my husband reached there, our son was no more," said the crestfallen mother of the deceased student.

"The authorities of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) sent the body of our son to our village in an ambulance without conducting a post-mortem examination. They also threatened us, claiming that nothing would happen to them if we reported the incident in the media, citing their status as a large organisation. We demand a thorough investigation and justice, as we still do not know the circumstances surrounding our child’s death," said the father of the deceased student.

The allegations came amid growing scrutiny over a series of student deaths linked to KISS. Earlier incidents include the deaths of three students from Keonjhar and two from Mohana in Gajapati district. The families have accused KISS of downplaying these deaths and providing questionable explanations, similar to the current case.

Despite mounting public pressure, KISS founder Achyuta Samanta and the institute’s management have remained silent. Allegations have emerged that efforts are being made to protect the institution’s image, including targeting media outlets seeking accountability.

The controversy has intensified demands for a thorough and impartial investigation into the deaths of students associated with KISS. Critics question why, if the institute is innocent, it has hesitated to provide clear answers and allowed a narrative that raises doubts about transparency and accountability.

"Many of our tribal students, due to their difficult financial circumstances, are compelled to study at KISS. However, their hopes are being shattered there. If any accidents or incidents occur, they should be reported transparently. Instead, the authorities appear to be attempting to cover up their mistakes by spreading falsehoods," said tribal leader Angad Kutruka.

In previous incidents, serious investigations have led to arrests, including senior KIIT officials and security personnel in the case of a Nepali student’s suicide, as well as eight individuals in the KISS student murder case. Yet, allegations suggest attempts continue to project a saintly image of Achyuta Samanta and his institutions despite repeated controversies.
