Kishore Nagar rape & murder case: Main accused held
Cuttack: The prime accused in the rape and murder of a 25-year old woman in Kishore Nagar area was arrested from Munduli by the Cuttack rural police on Friday.
The accused, identified as Durga Prasad Das, was a resident of Tarito village. Suspicions of the investigating officials grew about Das's involvement as he was absconding after the crime happened, said Gurudas Kundu, SP(Rural), Cuttack.
The SP disclosed Das was angry with the victim as she rejected his marriage proposal repeatedly. On September 23 evening, finding the lady alone, Das tried to rape her. However, when Das was unsuccessful with his attempt due to strong protest from the victim, he crushed her to death with a stone near a canal close to Tarito village and threw her body into Mahanadi river. Das committed the crime alone and denied the involvement of any accomplice.
Source said medical examination of Das will be done today. Later police will take the accused to the spot to know in detail about the sequence of events that led to crime.
The investigating officials are still waiting for the postmortem report to be be sure that the victim was raped before being killed.
Notably, the woman, a native of the same village as that of accused, had gone to nearby market on Monday evening to purchase some household items but she did not return home even after long hours. Unable to trace her, the family members of the girl approached the police. On Tuesday, the naked body of the woman was fished out from Mahanadi.
