Bhubaneswar: The family members of a six-year-old girl who lost one of her eyes allegedly due to a wrong medicine prescribed by a doctor have knocked the doors of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Chandramani Gocchayat, father of the victim girl Rinki, has filed a petition with the apex human rights body seeking action against the doctor and adequate compensation. He has also lodged a complaint with Town Police in Nayagarh in this regard.

According to sources, Chandramani of Nachhipur village under Daspalla block took his daughter Rinki to Daspalla CHC on September 29 after she suffered a minor injury in her right eye. However, as there were no eye doctors available at the hospital, Chandramani rushed her to Nayagarh DHH.

As per the prescription provided by the doctor there, Chandramani collected the required medicine drop from the Niramaya store. The doctor then suggested using 3-5 drops twice a day. After returning home, when he used the drops, Rinki lost vision in one of her eyes, alleged Chandramani.

Tensed, Chandramani again rushed her to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar where he was told by another doctor that the medicine prescribed was an ear drop. The damaged eye of the girl was removed at the hospital and an artificial eye was implanted.

It is alleged that the Nayagarh chief district medical officer (CDMO) Sweta Mohapatra is taking no further steps after ordering a probe into the matter. Mohapatra has assured Rs 15,000 for the treatment of Rinki.

“The girl suffered severe penetrative injuries in her eye that could not be cured. We have ordered a probe and are aware that the family members have moved the NHRC,” said the CDMO.
