Kharif paddy procurement in Sambalpur district officially began on Saturday after a joint meeting between farmer organisations and the district administration.
The decision came following discussions held at the Bareipali mandi, where representatives from farmer bodies, district officials, and procurement agencies reviewed the issues affecting the procurement process.
On the second day of operations, the District Supply Officer, the DRCS of the Cooperative Department, and the RMC Secretary held detailed talks with farmer leaders to ensure procurement begins smoothly. However, despite the mandis opening, paddy procurement could not be conducted as millers failed to participate in the purchase process, leading to a complete halt on the first day.
Both Sambalpur and Bargarh districts have opened their mandis for paddy collection from yesterday. Yet, even today, not a single sack of paddy has been lifted from the mandis, raising concerns among the farming community.

Farmers have already come forward with a long list of complaints, including the non-cooperation of millers, delay in token issuance, lack of proper facilities at mandis, and concerns about fair pricing and timely payment.
With procurement stalled for two consecutive days, farmer organisations have urged authorities to intervene immediately to prevent further disruption.
The district administration has assured that millers will be brought into the process without delay and that procurement will proceed as planned. Officials stated that steps are being taken to streamline operations so farmers do not face unnecessary hardship during the procurement season.
When contacted, Subodh Kumar Hota, District Supply Officer, informed, “All the members of Zilla Sangathan were present, along with farmers’ security association, and we have had a discussion. The administration is taking steps so that no farmers face any problems. As per the decision of the district administration, the paddy procurement will begin now. However, we are waiting for the consent from the millers and to make agreements.”
