Khandagiri Mela has commenced in Bhubaneswar, marking a major spiritual and cultural event in the Capital City. The fair, which began on the occasion of Magha Saptami, entered its second day today and is scheduled to continue for twelve days.

On one hand, the fair has witnessed a massive congregation of saints and seers, while on the other, several Jatra (opera) and folk theatre troupes have assembled to present their performances.

The foothills of Khandagiri are resonating with prayers, rituals, and chants as Sadhus from across Odisha and outside the State perform worship and recite sacred mantras. Large groups of ascetics can be seen across the Mela premises.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, various Jatra and theatre parties have arrived and are staging their cultural performances.

Worth mentioning, earlier yesterday, in a move to ensure smooth and disciplined conduct of Khandagiri Jatra (theatre), the Commissionerate Police-Bhubaneswar issued a set of 14 strict guidelines and served notices to jatra organising committees. The rules aim to maintain law and order, public safety and social harmony during the annual event.

As per the directives issued by Khandagiri Police, any form of nude dance, obscene acts, or provocative performances during the jatra has been strictly prohibited. Organisers have been instructed to provide at least six emergency entry and exit routes near the jatra pandal to handle crowd movement and emergencies.

“Jatra committees here are conscientious, and they all have agreed. We have also issued guidelines to them restricting the performance of any nude dance or obscene act during the jatra,” ACP Zone 3, Tapas Pradhan, said while speaking to mediapersons.
