Kangaroo Court: Panic grips families as anti-socials rule the roost in Khurda
Khurda: Several families of Hatabaradi village in Chilika block are now moving from pillar to post seeking justice after their houses were allegedly bulldozed by influential and some anti-social elements in Khurda district.
According to sources houses of two families were razed after they refused to pay extortion demanded by the anti-social elements.
The accused have also allegedly kidnapped the husband and son of another woman village which has now unleashed terror in the same village.
Shockingly, despite repeated complaints about such illegal activities, police remained a mute spectator, alleged local residents.
Purushottam Behera of the village alleged that some local anti-socials had demanded Rs 15,000 for constructing house on government land.
“The miscreants are forcibly collecting extortion by threatening us. We are now helpless as no action is being taken by police,” alleged Purushottam Behera, a local resident.
Chabi Behera, another resident stated “We are so poor that we find it hard to feed ourselves two square meals a day. How could we have paid Rs 15,000 and when we protested, some local influential people bulldozed my house.”
Not only that the local goons have also allegedly kidnapped the husband and son of one Parbati Behera of the village.
“They asked Rs 5,500 as extortion and when we did not pay, they took away everything including my family members. We are moving from pillar to post seeking help from police help,” Parbati said.
After the matter was brought to the notice of Khurda Collector, the police have assured investigation and action against the accused.
Khurda additional SP Pramod Samantaray said separate cases have been registered in connection with such allegations.
“I have directed the SDPO to investigate and stringent action would be taken against those found guilty if the allegations are found to be true,” said Samantaray.
