Kalinga Gananatya show cancelled in Gajapati after comedian’s sudden death

Tragedy struck the Kalinga Gananatya troupe hours after the inauguration of its much-anticipated Jatra (folk theatre) performance at Chheligada area in Gajapati district on Friday. 

As per reports, the opera was abruptly cancelled on its very first day following the sudden death of senior and popular comedian Budhiana, leaving the audience, artistes and the entire cultural fraternity in deep shock.

The inaugural show of Kalinga Gananatya was being staged at Chheligada with great enthusiasm. Hundreds of spectators had gathered to witness the opening night performance. However, moments after the show commenced, Budhiana, who was performing on stage, suddenly complained of severe discomfort and collapsed, triggering panic among fellow artistes and organisers.

He was immediately rushed to the Chheligada hospital for emergency medical attention. As his condition continued to worsen, doctors referred him to the Chandragiri Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite all efforts by the medical team, Budhiana was declared dead upon arrival at the Chandragiri Hospital.

According to sources close to the troupe, the veteran comedian had been suffering from respiratory-related ailments for the past few days. Preliminary information suggests that he may have suffered a cardiac arrest, though the exact cause of death is yet to be officially confirmed.

Following the tragic incident, the organisers announced the immediate cancellation of the opera on the opening day itself as a mark of respect to the departed artiste. The festive atmosphere surrounding the inauguration turned into one of mourning.

A pall of gloom has descended over the cultural community, with artistes, fans and theatre lovers expressing profound sorrow over the incident. Condolences have poured in from across the state, remembering Budhiana not only as a gifted performer but also as a dedicated artist who lived for the stage.
