Bhubaneswar: Journalist Abhijit Iyer-Mitra, who has been under judicial custody in Jharpada jail following his arrest over derogatory remarks on Odisha and Konark temple, has been admitted to the Capital Hospital today after he complained of stomach pain.

According to sources, Iyer-Mitra has been admitted to the surgery ward of the hospital and is undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, former MP Baijayant Panda took to twitter stating that even after apologising for his comments, which was accepted by the Odisha Assembly, Iyer-Mitra is still languishing in jail while hardened criminals move to hospitals within hours of being jailed.

The former parliamentarian also stated that the issue needs further introspection.

"This, after 5+ weeks in jail, even after profusely apologising for his comments, which was accepted by the Odisha Assembly.. When hardened criminals move to hospital within hours of being jailed, & accused rapists & murderers get bail much sooner than this.. Needs introspection," Panda tweeted.

“He (Iyer) has been admitted to the hospital after there was bleeding over Piles related problems. He will stay at least for three-four days. Further decision will be taken after examining his medical reports,”  said Chandrika Prasad Das, Director of Capital Hospital.

Meanwhile, Iyer’s advocate Nikhil Meyer said, “Iyer is facing Piles related problems and has been admitted to the Capital Hospital. The bail application was supposed to be listed on Monday, but will now be listed on Tuesday or Wednesday.”

Iyer-Mitra who posted a video on his twitter handle criticising and making derogatory comments on the people of the State, the Konark temple and Lord Jagannath in September this year was arrested by Odisha police after two FIRs were registered against him at the Konark police station in Puri and Saheed Nagar police station in Bhubaneswar.
