Journalist Abhijit Iyer granted bail by Konark JMFC court

Puri: The Court of Judicial Magistrate of First Class (JMFC) in Konark today granted bail to journalist Abhijit Iyer in connection with derogatory comments on Konark Temple and Odisha.

According to sources, the JMFC court granted bail to Iyer against a surety bond of Rs 20,000 and on the condition that he will refrain from making such derogatory comments in future.

After being granted bail by the court Iyer was discharged by the Capital hospital.

Earlier yesterday, the Orissa High Court had granted bail to Iyer in connection with the cases registered against him at Saheed Nagar and Konark police stations. However, the court had ruled that the lower trial courts can decide on the conditions while granting him bail.

Citing that Iyer had earlier appealed to ‘accept his apology and contrition’ in having wounded the sentiments of people of Odisha without intention, the State government on Tuesday had decided to drop the charges against the scribe.

Abhijit Iyer Mitra was arrested on October 23 and has been lodged at the Jharpara Jail in Bhubaneswar.
