Baripada: Activists of JMM today staged a road blockade at different places in Baripada and Balasore town demanding revival of the Amarda air strip at Rasgobindpur.

The activists led by the party’s State president stopped vehicles on NH-18 and shouted slogans against the government alleging government apathy towards the airstrip.

Vehicular traffic remained stranded on the highway for several hours following the strike. Barring the small vehicles and ambulances, the JMM activists did not allow any other vehicles to ply on the highway.

Besides the NH, the activists also staged blockade at Palabani, Baisinga and Betanoti and few other places in Balasore.

“Revival of the Amarda air strip will ensure development of economy and tourism of the place. Though the State government has notified for the same, no work has been carried out yet,” said a JMM activist.

The issue has been raised before the government on several occasions but nothing has been done yet, he added.

The Amarda airstrip was built by the Royal Air Force during the World War II. The airstrip has an 11,000 feet runway and bunkers, said sources.
