Mineral rich District, Jharsuguda is one of the most industrially developed District of Odisha. Jharsuguda District was established on 1st January, 1994. Earlier it was a part of Sambalpur District. It was created by amalgamation of the erstwhile Jamindars of Rampur, Kolabira, Padampur and Kudabaga. Major portion of the land area covering hilly region has a radish stony soil. The economy of the Jharsuguda District can be judged through its natural resources. The District is rich in minerals like coals, quartzite and fire clay. Several industrial units like Vendanta Alumina, Bhusan Steel and Power, TATA Refractories are operating in the District that contributes to the economic growth of the District. There are also some major forest products like Kendu leaves, wood, rice and leather that also contribute significantly to the economy of Jharsuguda District.
Sushil Kumar Lohani, the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Odisha on Friday said the polling in the upcoming bypoll to the Brajrajnagar Assembly constituency will be held at a total of 279 booths including five pink booths exclusively reserved for women voters.
“It is unfortunate that the Chhattisgarh government is not letting Mahandi water to flow by closing 66 gates of the barrage. Up to seven kilometres from the barrage along Chhattisgarh, the river gives an illusion of a sea while the same river on the Odisha side looks like desert. We will demand the Chhattisgarh government to open at least five sluice gates in order to ensure water inflows to Hirakud dam. The government should let the river flow.”
The BJD has picked Alaka Mohanty, the widow Kishore Mohanty, as its candidate for the by-election while the BJP nominated former MLA Radharani Panda. The Congress party has fielded Kishore Chandra Patel as its candidate.
