Heavy crowds were seen at several petrol pumps in Odisha’s Malkangiri amid fears of a possible rise in petrol prices following the recent increase in LPG cylinder prices due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Long queues formed at fuel stations across the district as people rushed to fill their vehicles, fearing a sharp hike in fuel prices in the coming days.
The rush has been witnessed since Friday night, with many residents fearing that petrol and diesel supplies might run out.
Rumours Trigger Panic Buying
According to reports, the crowd gathered at petrol pumps in Malkangiri sadar subdivision after rumours spread that petrol and diesel stocks were running out amid the ongoing war situation. The situation led to panic buying at a few fuel stations in the area.
However, the government has urged the public not to believe such rumours. Authorities have clarified that there is adequate fuel stock available in the country.
Supply Changes Behind Delay
Experts said petrol is usually supplied to Malkangiri from the Jharsuguda depot. However, due to a major maintenance work, fuel is currently being supplied from Balasore, Paradip and Jatani.

Because these locations are farther away, transportation costs and travel time have slightly increased, which has led to a minor price rise. Officials said the price change is not linked to any war-related tensions.
As petrol is now reportedly being transported from distant locations, it is taking longer than usual to reach Malkangiri, causing temporary delays in restocking at some petrol pumps.
Meanwhile, authorities have assured that there is no need to panic as there is no fuel shortage expected.
