Khurda: Demanding arrest of local BJD MLA Prasant Jagdev for allegedly threatening a former sarpanch, some enraged locals today ransacked the Begunia Police Station in Khurda after barging into the premises forcibly.

As per allegations, the BJD MLA had threatened former sarpanch Nanda Kishore Swain. Jagdev had threatened to physically assault Swain following which the latter had lodged a complaint at the police station some days back. However, after no action was taken against the local BJD MLA, some locals today resorted to vandalism demanding immediate arrest of the legislator.

"He had physically assaulted me after which I had written to the district collector and met Superintendent of police. When no steps were taken, a protest was organised against the MLA today," Swain said.

Sources said that there were extensive damages to the furniture and files kept at the police station.

"Some people vandalised the police station and even tried to stop the vehicle which was carrying the injured ASI to hospital. Strict action will be taken against those who were involved in the incident," Khurda SP Diptiranjan Rai said.

The enraged locals also gheraoed the police station and staged a road blockade which affected vehicular movement on National Highway 57.

"The local MLA has assaulted the sarpanch who has been there for last 35 years. We have promised to throw the MLA out of this place," said a local resident Bansidhar Sahu.

Later, Superintendent of Police reached the spot to pacify the locals. As per latest reports, normalcy has been restored at the spot.
