An injured adult elephant is undergoing continuous treatment after wandering alone in the forested region of Telkoi in Odisha's Keonjhar for the past few months. The elephant reportedly sustained severe injuries three months ago after being attacked by another tusker while moving with a herd of 34 elephants near the forest close to Padanga village.
According to Forest Department sources, the elephant suffered deep puncture wounds on its leg and other parts of its body during the confrontation. Following the attack, forest officials had initially administered medicines through food to support its recovery. However, when the wounds failed to heal completely, the tusker was tranquilised and given direct medical treatment.
Pachyderm Under 24-Hour Protection
Officials said that, on the instructions of the PCCF (Wildlife), 24-hour protection is being provided to the injured elephant to prevent further attacks from other elephants in the region. Continuous monitoring and veterinary supervision have been put in place as part of the treatment measures.
Forest officials indicated that the elephant’s condition is gradually improving and that the interventions are showing positive results.
Dhanraj HD, Telkoi Forest Division DFO, said, “We are treating the elephant and it is slowly healing as the days go by. There is visible improvement in its health condition. It is a magnificent elephant and we are glad that it is responding well to treatment. We hope that the wounds will heal completely soon and that the limping will stop.”
