Illegal sand transportation: 9 arrested, several Hyva trucks seized

Cuttack: Acting against the illegal sand transportation, the Lalbag police today seized nine Hyva trucks engaged in transporting the minor mineral.

On basis of a tip off, the police frisked vehicles at the ring road in Lalbag area here this morning. During a search, the police stopped nine sand laden trucks. After the truck drivers failed to produce the requisite documents, police arreeted them and seized the vehicles. Later the accused were forwarded to a court.

Sources said police probe is underway to find out the details of lease and sand mining operations.

On the other hand, rampant sand mining in Cuttack has raised concerns among environmentalists and many local residents. It has been alleged that police have turned a blind eye to sand mining in river beds in the Millennium city.
