Illegal cockfighting thrives in Sundargarh, lakhs at stake

Illegal cockfighting is allegedly being conducted openly and unabated in parts of Sundargarh district, with wagers reportedly running into lakhs of rupees, raising serious concerns over law enforcement and animal welfare. Such unlawful activities are currently underway in the Kal Sahi area of Choradhara village under K. Balang police station limits in Koida block, sources said.

According to locals, cockfighting events are being organised in full public view, drawing large crowds and involving high-stakes gambling. This, however, is not an isolated incident. Similar events are reportedly taking place in several nearby areas, indicating a widespread and organised network behind the illegal activity.

Eyewitnesses alleged that sharp metal blades and other weapons are tied to the legs of the roosters before forcing them to fight each other in an extremely brutal manner. The violent fights often continue until one of the birds is severely injured or killed. Huge sums of money, amounting to lakhs of rupees, are reportedly being staked on the outcome of these fights, making it a lucrative but illegal betting operation.

Despite the seriousness of the issue, no official response or clarification has been received from the police so far. The apparent lack of immediate action has triggered concern and resentment among residents, who fear that such activities may continue unchecked.

It is pertinent to mention that cockfighting is a punishable offence under the law. Using animals or birds for violent entertainment and gambling constitutes serious animal cruelty and is strictly prohibited under existing legal provisions. Locals have demanded swift police intervention to curb the illegal practice and take stringent action against those involved.
