Efforts are underway to strengthen Bhubaneswar’s drainage infrastructure, with IIT Roorkee preparing a comprehensive master plan aimed at addressing long-standing waterlogging issues in the city.
Odisha Irrigation and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra informed that the master plan is nearing completion and will soon be followed by a Detailed Project Report (DPR).
Mahapatra admitted that Bhubaneswar’s drainage system suffers from several flaws, which are now being rectified through planned interventions.
He said, “There are definite deficiencies in the city’s drainage system. IIT Roorkee is making the master plan, which is almost ready and will soon submit the DPR. Based on the final version of the DPR, new constructions will be taken up to resolve the waterlogging problem. The construction work will begin right after the monsoon ends.”
Artificial Flooding After Heavy Rainfall
The Minister further pointed out that continuous rainfall over the past few months has delayed major construction activities. He also attributed the recent artificial flooding in the State capital to the unusually heavy rainfall recorded yesterday.
Mahapatra emphasised that the State government is committed to finding a long-term solution to the recurring problem of waterlogging in Bhubaneswar and that work will begin in earnest as soon as the monsoon season concludes.
