A PhD student lost his life and another sustained critical injuries after a scooter in which they were travelling met with an accident inside the IITBhubaneswar campus late on Monday night, triggering a police investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident.
As per reports, the accident occurred when the scooter carrying two students hit a divider within the IIT Bhubaneswar campus. Police said both students were travelling on the scooter when the mishap took place. Campus authorities and police personnel rushed to the spot soon after the incident.
Both injured students were immediately rescued by the police and shifted to a hospital for treatment. However, one of them succumbed to his injuries.
Victim Identified, Another Critical
The deceased has been identified as Shankhashubhra Chakraborty, a PhD scholar from Kolkata. The other student, Shakti Sagar Srivastav, who is also a PhD scholar and hails from Kolkata, West Bengal, sustained serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital. His condition was stated to be critical.
Police Probe Underway
Police launched an investigation to ascertain how the accident occurred, particularly as it took place within the campus premises. Officials are examining the circumstances that led to the scooter hitting the divider and are verifying other relevant details linked to the incident.
