Bhubaneswar: In its bid to assess the impact of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), the Odisha government on Friday decided to engage IIT-Bhubaneswar to undertake a study in this regard, official sources said.

A decision in this regard was taken at the fourth governing body meeting of Odisha State Rural Road Agency chaired by Rural Development minister B K Arukh.

The cost of the assessment study will be provided from the PMGSY Administrative Fund.

The governing body felt the necessity of an assessment study as implementation of PMGSY has already completed 12 years in the state and likely to continue for another 10 years.

"There is a need to assess the impact of the programme in achieving rural connectivity. The assessment can be utilised for better implementation of the scheme in coming years," Arukh said.

Prior to implementation of PMGSY programme in the state in 2000, of total 50,099 of habitations in Odisha, 21,076 habitations were connected and balance 29,023 were left unconnected, they said.

Till November 2012, 13,673 habitations had been sanctioned by the Ministry of Rural Development in phased manner under PMGSY out of balance 29,023 unconnected habitations.

Further, 4,703 unconnected habitations are also eligible under the programme as per present norms of PMGSY programme.Besides this, 7,065 unconnected habitations are likely to be included in PMGSY if norms are relaxed.
