Bhubaneswar: With a particular area in Cuttack district reporting high incidence of renal diseases, the Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR) has decided to conduct a study to ascertain the reason behind it.

"A three-year project to find the causes of renal problems in a particular pocket has been sanctioned by ICMR. The work on the project will start soon," Director of Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Bhubaneswar, Dr S S Kar told reporters here.

Dr Kar said that the study was essential as blood samples of people living in Narashinghpur area of Cuttack district suggested a high level of mercury while there was no trace of mercury in water available in the area. The study would focus on how mercury got into the blood stream in the particular area.

The RMRC has contacted the Cuttack district administration to hold consultations with stakeholders like the Pollution Control Board, industries and people to ascertain this.
