Far from the hustle and glamour of city life, and well outside pollution-prone AQI zones, the Debrigarh homestay is drawing visitors with the arrival of winter. Nestled in a forested village on the banks of the Hirakud reservoir, the homestay offers tourists a refreshing rural experience amid nature.
One of the highlights is the traditional food cooked on wood-fired stoves. Hot, homely meals, thatched-roof houses and soft, dim lighting recreate memories long forgotten in urban living.
This is Dhodrokusum village, located within the Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary. Mud walls decorated with beautiful paintings and terracotta artwork lend the houses a distinct identity, easily noticeable even from a distance. The village wakes early with sunrise and now sees a steady influx of tourists.
Five houses in the village have been given a special makeover, allowing visitors to stay in accommodation arranged specifically for guests visiting the Debrigarh sanctuary. The Hirakud Wildlife Sanctuary authorities have supported this initiative by giving five houses a new look, blending heritage with comfort.
“We are so accustomed to an urban lifestyle, and taking time out to come to this quiet place feels refreshing. Spending time here has been a pleasant experience. The ambience is very good,” said a tourist.
Speaking about the initiative, Ansupragyan Das, Divisional Forest Officer (Wildlife), said, “The five Homestays developed in Dhodrokusum village have been entirely created by the villagers themselves. Local artisans and carpenters have made significant contributions, using different types of mud in the construction. All bookings are done online with zero cash transactions. Through Ecotourism.com, rooms and safaris are being booked along with cruises and other packages.”
Community-Driven Tourism Model
Since 2023, the village has been recognised as a ‘Green Village’. Three families manage the five homestay houses, and the income generated is shared among the families and the village community. All essential modern facilities have been provided by the Debrigarh sanctuary authorities.
By preserving tradition while embracing sustainable tourism, the Debrigarh homestay has transformed a quiet forest village into a meaningful travel destination, offering visitors serenity and villagers a shared path to development.
