Keonjhar: From first appearance, Kavita Pradhan of Nahabeda village appears to be a perfect homemaker. However, she has carved her niche for herself by breaking the stereotypes to become an autorickshaw driver to support her family.

It was Kavita’s husband, Shankarshan Pradhan, who inspired her and taught her the basics of driving. Since then it was no looking back for Kavita who has gained accolades for taking up the profession which is mostly male-dominated.

Kavita’s husband sells vegetables and it was hard on his part to look after all the financial needs of the family. Initially, her driving skills were poor and she wasn’t confident of going out with the vehicle. But with tmuch-required support and encouragement from her husband, Kavita learned to drive.

“It has been eight years since I have been driving autorickshaw. It was my husband who allowed me to drive. I am happy that I am able to support my family,” said Kavita.

Kavita’s mother-in-law, Sumita, stated that earlier people were talking a lot of things behind her back. But now everybody is happy over her daughter-in-law’s achievement.

“Like any other homemaker, Kavita wakes up early and completes all the household chores including sending her kids to school. Later, she steps out of the home with her autorickshaw,” said Sumitra.
