As the festival of colours, Holi, will be celebrated tomorrow (March 4, Wednesday), people across the State are gearing up for vibrant festivities. However, health experts caution that certain synthetic colours used during celebrations can pose serious risks to the skin, eyes, hair, and respiratory system.

Well-known cosmetic surgeon Dr Akshaya Kumar Rout, in a detailed discussion with OTV, advised the revellers to take preventive measures before stepping out to play Holi. Dr Rout suggested applying coconut oil or moisturiser generously on the skin and hair to create a protective barrier against harsh chemical colours.
Wearing full-sleeved clothing and protective eyewear can also reduce direct exposure. Special care should be taken to prevent colours from entering the eyes, nose, and ears. In case of irritation, immediate washing with clean water is recommended.
People should avoid using unknown or low-quality chemical colours to minimise the risk of allergies and infections.
Children, elderly individuals, and asthma patients are particularly vulnerable and should avoid excessive exposure to powder colours. Opting for organic or herbal colours and celebrating in well-ventilated areas can significantly reduce health risks and ensure a safe and joyful Holi.
“We all should enjoy Holi celebrations. But at the same time, we need to be careful about health hazards caused by playing with the colours in an unregulated manner. Before stepping out of our homes, we should ascertain our skin types. Whether it is of mixed type or is vulnerable to allergies,” the cosmetic surgeon said.
“At times, skins develop rashes or swell for unknown reasons. Colours used for playing Holi contain heavy metals, which are chiefly responsible for causing allergies on our skin. Those who are sensitive to allergies need to remain very careful,” Dr Rout stated.
