Tunnel-7, measuring 1,975 metres and located between Purunakatak and Charichhak in Boudh district, recently achieved a successful breakthrough. Following this milestone, the focus shifted to equipping the tunnel with advanced safety infrastructure in strict compliance with prescribed railway safety standards.

Focus on Safety and Emergency Preparedness

The tunnel has been developed with meticulous engineering and special emphasis on structural stability, fire safety, ventilation efficiency, electrical reliability, and emergency response mechanisms. Advanced Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems have been installed as per approved designs and are currently undergoing testing and commissioning.

Key Safety Features Installed

  • High-capacity ventilation system with jet fans to maintain air quality and control smoke during emergencies.
  • Comprehensive fire-fighting arrangements, including hydrant lines, hose reels and strategically placed fire extinguishers.
  • Tunnel lighting and automatic emergency lighting system with power backup and illuminated exit signage.
  • Public Address (PA) and CCTV surveillance systems for real-time communication and continuous monitoring.
  • SOS emergency calling system enabling direct contact with the control room from within the tunnel.
  • Linear Heat Detection System (LHDS) for continuous temperature monitoring and early fire detection.
  • Advanced ballastless (slab) track technology, ensuring superior alignment, reduced maintenance, and enhanced operational reliability, particularly suited for tunnel sections.

Boost to Odisha Connectivity

Officials said all systems have been thoroughly checked, with functional testing in progress and commissioning to be completed in phases. The Khordha Road–Bolangir Rail Line Project is one of Odisha’s most significant connectivity initiatives, aimed at bridging the long-standing gap between coastal and western Odisha.
