Heavy rainfall forecast in Odisha: Collectors Put On Alert

Bhubaneswar: Odisha government on Friday issued an advisory to Collectors of several districts to remain alert in view of the heavy rain forecast issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD). As per the latest weather bulletin, the IMD has issued ‘Orange Warning’ for the districts of Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur and Puri as heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in these districts tomorrow.

“Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast now lies over northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha and West Bengal coasts. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over Odisha and the neighbourhood in next 36 hours,” IMD’s bulletin read.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Rayagada, Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir, Angul, Kalahandi and Koraput on August 24 and 25.

Similarly, light to moderate rain & thundershowers will also occur at several places of north and south interior Odisha on August 26. Heavy rainfall is also likely in isolated places in the districts of Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Bolangir and Nuapada.

As gusty winds reaching up to 40-50 kmph are likely to prevail, the fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea on August 24 and 25 as the sea is expected to remain rough.

In a letter, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has also directed Fire services, ODRAF and NDRF officials to remain in readiness for immediate deployment and launching rescue operations, if required.
