Heavy Rain Alert: IMD issues ‘Red Warning’ for 3 Odisha districts

Bhubaneswar: With southwest Monsoon now active in Odisha, several parts of Odisha are experienced heavy rainfall  in the past 24 hours. Moreover, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued ‘Red Alert’ for three districts in Odisha.

As per the latest weather bulletin, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places of Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur tomorrow.

HR Biswas, director of Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre, informed that, “Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourbood extends up to 7.6 km above sea level and now lies over north Odisha and adjoining areas of Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand. Red warning has been issued for Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur for tomorrow.”

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bargarh, Sonepur, Bolangir and Kandhamal. Yellow warning has also been issued for the districts of Ganjam, Nayagarh, Puri, Khurda, Angul, Cuttack, Boudh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Sundergarh tomorrow.

Several parts of Odisha witnessed intense spell of rain in the past 24 hours. Nabarangpur district received around 173mm of rainfall, Puri (160 mm), Sonepur (101mm) while the intensity of rainfall is likely to increase in the next 24 hours.

As sea condition along Odisha coast is likely to be rough due to the strong monsoon current, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off Odisha coast and northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal during the next 24 hours.
