HC refuses CBI probe into coal scam

Bhubaneswar:  High Court on Wednesday declined to order a CBI probe into the mega coal scam that created a stir last year. A division bench while disposing a PIL which pleaded for a CBI inquiry observed that CBI need not be involved and the state vigilance may continue with the probe.

“At this stage, direction for CBI probe is not necessary”, the Bench ordered and wanted a thorough investigation by vigilance, the anti-corruption wing of the police.

The Bench emphasized that vigilance should take up the case, take appropriate coercive steps against the accused persons (involved in the scam).

Earlier, a PIL filed by petitioner Nishikant Mishra alleged the involvement of many big wigs in massive corruption, as Orissa Small Industries Corporation (OSIC) and Orissa Consumers Co-operative Federation (OCCF) got mired in controversies. 

The state urban development minister Badri Narayan Patra and school and mass education minister Pratap Jena were alleged to have been involved in the irregularities while heading the OSIC in the on different occasions.
