Cuttack: The Odisha High Court today directed the state government to appoint a new Commissioner of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) by August 10.

Expressing shock over the fact that the post of the Commissioner in the civic body is lying vacant for nearly three months now, the Division Bench of Justices B P Das and Indrajit Mahanti wondered as to how the government could be so irresponsive that an important civic body of the state is functioning without an administrative head for so many days. Ever since the incumbent R N Nanda retired from services on April 30, the post of CMC commissioner is lying vacant even as the residents of the city are facing untold miseries.

The High Court also asked the State urban secretary to involve technical experts in order to ascertain the root cause of drainage and sewerage problems of Cuttack city. "The urban development secretary should find a solution to the Cuttack civic problems, which are wrecking havoc during the rainy seasons," the bench observed.
