Koraput: A Maoist carrying a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head, surrendered before the district police yesterday in Koraput. As per reports, the red rebel Dhananjay Gope alias Sudhir laid down his arms before the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, South Western Range, Himanshu Lal.

Sudhir was greeted with flower bouquet in presence of Lal, Malkangiri SP Jagmohan Meena and Koraput SP Kanwar Vishal Singh at the DIG office in Koraput.

The surrendered Maoist was Divisional Committee Member (DCM) of Gumma area committee of Malkangiri district and was an active member of the Kalimela area in 2009. He was involved in several high-profile cases including that of violence and murder of innocent people.

Addressing a presser in Koraput, Himanshu Lal said, “Around 26 cases were pending against him. Developmental activities in these regions have brought hopes among the disillusioned ultras to return to the mainstream.”
