A dedicated Gupchup (pani puri) market will soon open in Odisha's Bhubaneswar, offering residents a convenient and hygienic space to enjoy the popular street snack. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched the initiative as a pilot project to streamline roadside vending and reduce traffic congestion caused by unauthorised stalls.

As per reports, the BMC identified land in front of the Regional Institute of Education for the project. Mayor Sulochana Das inspected the site and reviewed the proposed layout. All Gupchup vendors operating between Saheed Nagar Square and Nicco Park will be identified and brought under the new vending zone. Each vendor will receive a specially designed trolley free of cost.

Focus on Cleanliness and Organised Vending

The vending zone, developed under the open vending zone model, can accommodate between 30 and 40 stalls, reportedly. The area has been paved with paver blocks, beautified, and equipped with parking and other facilities. Vendors will be permitted to operate from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., with adequate lighting arranged for the evening hours. Emphasis will be placed on maintaining hygiene, with stallholders required to wear gloves while serving food.

Mayor Highlights Need for Orderly Business

Speaking about the initiative, Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das said, “Gupchup is being sold everywhere, and it is liked by people. We wanted to do an experiment. The area was lying deserted and unutilised, so we cleaned it up and plan to set up stalls for vendors there. This will give them a designated spot to do business rather than standing by the road. From 4 to 10 p.m., they will be able to set up their stalls, and we will arrange lighting for them during that time. We will also provide them with a certain type of covered trolley stall and enforce that they wear gloves.”
